What Is XP?
Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genetic disorder that causes extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet light (sunlight), leading to a high risk of skin and eye cancers. It is caused by a defect in the DNA repair system, meaning the body cannot properly repair DNA damage from UV light. This results in symptoms like severe sunburns, early and severe sun-induced aging, pigmentary changes and some people with XP also experience neurological problems, such as hearing loss, blindness, poor balance, or cognitive difficulties.
